354: George Rodriguez on sculpture, personal identity, and community building - Tales of a Red Clay Rambler: A pottery and ceramic art podcast
Today on the Tales of a Red Clay Rambler Podcast I have an interview with George Rodriguez. He creates ceramic sculptures decorated with vibrant low relief patterns that explore themes of personal identity and community building. In our interview we talk about the influence of the Bonderman Travel Fellowship, which funded his travel to twenty-six countries, and how this shaped his understanding of culture. We also discuss the logistics of building large ceramic sculpture, how adornment can initiate sacred space, and his exhibition La Flor, El Nicho, y sus Memorias, which was recently on display at the Clay Studio in Philadelphia, PA. I am what I call a functional hobbyist. In other words, I am a potter that makes and sells functional pottery, but more as a hobby than as my main source of income. My main goal with The Potters Cast is to serve the community of ceramic artists and potters around the world by bringing interviews of other ceramicists straight to you. My hope is that, while listening to the shows, you will be challenged, encouraged, and inspired for your own creative endeavors. Click to listen to an episode
Finding Success Through Experiments | Casey Taylor | Episode 598 - The Potters Cast | Pottery | Ceramics | Art | Craft
Casey Taylor found ceramics in college. After focusing on illustration, painting, and drawing, Casey took an 'intro to ceramics' class as an elective and never looked back. Casey focused on ceramic sculpture in school, though she was always drawn to pottery because of the tangible connection between the maker and the user. Now working as an artist, Casey is finding new ways to combine sculpture and pottery into functional art objects.
